Geert Van Gele has achieved a special place among Flemish musicians. As the artistic director of the Flanders Festival of Brussels and Ghent, I had the opportunity to experience the way in which Geert Van Gele is able to enthrall an audience with his virtuosic recorder playing. During a concert with the Ensemble Ex Tempore, he made converts of his public. He completely convinced them of the value of his instrument and of the beauty of early 17th-century repertoire. This achievement was so much more remarkable because of the fact that this particular audience had no experience whatsoever with Early Music.
In addition to his ravishing interpretations on stage, Geert Van Gele stands out by programming original ensembles like the 'duo Van Gele - Taylor' (recorder - harp), and Sospiri Ardenti.
It is clear that Geert Van Gele has earned his place among the top early musicians in the Flemish Early Music scene, and is highly appreciated by his colleagues. I would indeed be very pleased if his talent would become known outside the unique world of Early Music specialists. Every initiative that will lead to the spreading of his work carries my full support.
